The Scarlet Pimpernel: The Complete Series 1

The first series of the popular period adventure series. In the opening episode, only the Scarlet Pimpernel (Richard E. Grant) stands in the way of Citizen Robespierre and his henchman, Chauvelin (Martin Shaw). Suspecting the Pimpernel to be an English aristocrat, Chauvelin travels to England. There he encounters his former love, French actress Marguerite, now married to the foppish Sir Percy Blakeny (Grant). Without realizing it, Marguerite betrays her husband by supplying Chauvelin with information regarding the Pimpernel. In 'A King's Ransom', when the ten-year-old Dauphin, Robespierre's pawn and heir to the French throne, is kidnapped by a sinister masked figure, Sir Percy hotfoots it in pursuit. His life is soon in peril, for everyone with any information relating to the kidnapping ends up dead. Only one man can be responsible: deadly swordsman Chevalier D'Orly. In 'Valentin Gautier', Sir Percy travels to France with his wife Marguerite (Elizabeth McGovern) in order to rescue the daughter of a French nobleman from Mademoiselle Guillotine (Denise Black). Matters become complicated when Marguerite is captured, along with Robespierre's right-hand man, Chauvelin, who finds his past returning to haunt him.
